Your sleeping bag rating means nothing if your pad can't hold body heat against the ground. Cold ground pulls warmth away faster than cold air — a R-2 pad on a 40°F night will leave you shivering in a bag rated to 20°F.

What R-value means

R-value (thermal resistance) measures how well a material resists heat transfer per unit thickness. In sleeping pad terms: R-1 lets heat escape easily; R-6 keeps it well. The ASTM F3340-18 standard established a consistent lab test in 2020 — pads tested under this standard can be compared directly. Older pads or pads without ASTM testing may use manufacturer-measured values that are not comparable.

One critical point: R-values are additive. Stacking a R-2 closed-cell foam pad under a R-3 inflatable gives you R-5 — genuinely useful for extending a three-season pad into colder conditions.

R-value by season and condition

  • R-1 to R-2: summer camping, nights above 50°F (10°C), platforms off the ground (hammocks, cots). Not suitable for ground sleeping below 50°F.
  • R-3 to R-4: three-season camping, spring through fall, nights down to 35°F (2°C). The most versatile range for most US campers.
  • R-4 to R-5: shoulder-season and early winter camping, nights down to 20°F (-7°C). Required for late October through April camping at most US elevations.

Pad types and their R-value ranges

Closed-cell foam (CCF): dense foam that cannot be punctured and requires no inflation. Typical R-value: 1.5–2.5. Indestructible, inexpensive, and works when wet. Limitation: bulky to carry. Best use: under an inflatable for combined insulation, or solo for warm-weather car camping.

Air pads: inflated via mouth or pump sack. Without insulation, air circulates inside and conducts heat away — R-values under ASTM testing are often R-1 to R-2. Modern air pads with internal baffles or Mylar reflectors achieve R-3 to R-5+. Comfortable and lightweight, but a puncture in the field requires repair.

Self-inflating pads: open-cell foam that expands when the valve opens, then topped up by mouth. R-values range from R-2 to R-5 depending on thickness. Heavier than pure air pads but more puncture-resistant and naturally insulating.

Insulated inflatable pads (e.g., Therm-a-Rest NeoAir, Sea to Summit Ether Light XT): synthetic fill or reflective Mylar barriers inside achieve R-3 to R-7+ at light weights. The best performance-to-weight pads available, at a higher price.

Stacking pads for more warmth

  • A $20 closed-cell foam pad (R-1.8) under a three-season air pad (R-3) adds up to R-4.8 — winter-capable without buying a new pad.
  • Put the CCF foam on the ground, inflatable on top: the foam protects against punctures and adds insulation simultaneously.
  • This combination works especially well in snow camping where ground insulation demands are highest.
  • Total pack weight increase is roughly 10–12 oz for a full-length CCF pad — a reasonable trade-off for extended warmth.

Common mistakes

  • Buying for the lowest expected temperature rather than typical conditions — a R-6 winter pad is overkill for summer car camping and significantly heavier than necessary.
  • Ignoring pad width — a 20-inch-wide pad leaves hips and shoulders hanging off the edge, increasing heat loss regardless of R-value.
  • Comparing R-values from different testing standards — pre-2020 pads without ASTM F3340-18 ratings may be overstated by 20–40%.
  • Using an air pad alone in cold conditions — without internal insulation, plain air pads are thermal conductors, not insulators.
