How to choose hiking boots

Trip type is the primary filter. Day hikes on maintained trails need less support than multi-day backpacking with a loaded pack. Technical scrambles and off-trail travel demand stiffer, more protective boots than walking paths.

Fit is more important than brand. Your heel should not slip — even 2mm of movement causes blisters on a 10-mile day. Toes need 1cm of space at the front for foot expansion on long descents. Always try boots on in the afternoon when feet are slightly swollen.

Waterproofing trade-offs: Gore-Tex membranes keep moisture out but reduce breathability significantly. In dry climates or summer hiking, a non-waterproof leather or mesh boot often keeps feet drier through sweat management than a waterproof model.

Breaking in new boots

  • Wear the socks you hike in when fitting — sock thickness changes effective boot fit.
  • First 2–3 outings: flat terrain, 3–5 miles, with day-hike weight only.
